Commencement Bay Residence
Rhodes Architecture + Light was asked to design home renovations + additions of an engineering consultant we’ve worked with for two decades. Over the years, our relationship had grown through numerous design collaborations, laying a strong foundation of trust and understanding. The client’s deep familiarity with our work and processes allowed us to align seamlessly with their design goals and expectations.
As the owners approach becoming “empty-nesters”, they envisioned expanding the second story of their 1953 coastal Tacoma, Washington home spatially and aesthetically. Alongside a new primary suite and older kid’s bedroom, they wanted a seamless exterior entertainment space connecting their existing dining and living space to the outdoors, new landscape and dynamic views of Commencement Bay. They emphasized their love of clear, clean space, light and modern Scandinavian design elements.
Thoughtful attention was given to spatial flow, massing, and material selection, resulting in interiors that feel both inviting and purposeful, with clean lines and warm textures framing expansive views toward the bay and adjacent water. A simple vaulted roofline, new material expressions, a strong supporting arbor and anchoring terraces + landscaping helped Rhodes Architecture + Light ground the home addition and extend the rear, view side of the residence, adding significant value to the home. Blurring the divide between indoor and outdoor environments, the design celebrates gathering as an extension of daily living, while the interplay of natural wood and daylight further enhances the sense of openness and tranquility throughout the primary suite. Through the addition of new bedrooms, bath, dressing, and integral exterior places to entertain, the design enhances a beautiful home and site while adding needed space in a calm, seamless addition.
