A young couple engaged Rhodes Architecture + Light in the fall of 2023, when their family began outgrowing their 1,800 square foot, 1924 Craftsman home in West Seattle.  The solution is a second story addition. The motivation of our team was to carefully translate the language and aesthetic of the “craftsmen” style into a larger scale home, while also creating a form compatible with the generally lower height residential neighborhood. A broad wrap-around porch became an anchor to the second story and lends a wonderful neighborhood-friendly outdoor space for future family gatherings on the open corner lot.

Borrowing from and supplementing the Craftsman details and proportions of the original house was important to ensure the additions created a strong, rich, cohesive design that did not feel tacked on. The second story incorporates vaulted spaces under gabled roofs, including two lofted kids’ bedrooms and shared bath, a parent’s suite and bath, laundry room, added storage and hall and mechanical space. The new day-light filled stairs acts as a beacon in a bay at the east end of the home. The kitchen was redesigned as well as the back porch. Outside, varied siding and accent trim seamlessly meld the older home and the new addition to create a more substantial family residence with the elements of “home”.

Rhodes Architecture + Light permitted the grander, 3,000 square foot home in spring, 2024 and will soon begin construction.
